Timeline: 1 week

OVERVIEW

Another Tuesday is a 2D game jam game made in Unreal Engine 5 for the Global Game Jam Vancouver 2024, and was my first game jam. With the theme of a jam to "make people laugh", the idea was for it to be a simple action survival game where players attempt to survive multiple floors of enemies. The players takes control of Chad, a bartender that was fired from his job at the bar as he goes on a rampage to destroy in social relationships. This includes fighting enemies such as his buff gym friends, his religious cousins, some funky-looking kids, and finally his ex-wife. The ex-wife in particular was meant to show up once on one of the early floors as a joke boss that seems intimidating, but can be beaten in one hit. Due to constraints such as time and recruiting a programmer late, we were only able to achieve a portion of our full game plan which was a learning experience. To showcase some of these ideas, I created a mockup video in Adobe Premiere that includes some cut content such as different attacks and a missing enemy.

My contributions:

In this project, I served two roles with the smaller one being that of the game designer that came up with the initial game concept. My main role that that of the artist who created the pixel arts graphics seen in the game and video mockup. I illustrated these 2D sprites using Aseprite, an illustration program geared towards making animated sprites.

In total, I created 5 character sprites (1 player and 4 enemies), a foreground tile sheet, and a city background. This was done over a couple of days in the evening alongside other group tasks such as attending meeting calls and planning with my teammates. In order to be in-line with the game's comedic theme, I had the enemies in the game showcase a bunch of exaggerated proportions. The buff gym friends had huge arms, the cousins had large legs, and the kids had large heads. The game's boss, the Ex-Wife was made to look monstrous as to fit what most divorcees probably view their spouses as should it be a particularly nasty separation.

On the final workday, I decided to create a video mockup using the sprites I made as well as the audio that our team's audio designer made. This showcases a cut enemy as well as some other animations that didn't make it to the final game and was made in Adobe Premiere. You can view the mockup at the top of this page.

Skills and Tools

Various assets I developed in Aesprite

  • Created animated sprites in Aseprite, including complex actions that were broken down into simple loops

  • Adapted the design of the game quickly to the game jam's comedic theme fast, creating a short but fun concept

  • Used video editing skills to create a mockup in Adobe Premiere, allowing the team to showcase extra ideas.

The game was made using Unreal Engine 5, although I did not program the game and instead provided some advice and helped the team's programmer diagnose bugs within the game's blueprint system for hit detection.

The Challenge

My personal challenge came in budgeting my time properly in order to create all the art assets. With only a week and difficult constraints of not having a programmer for a couple of days, I had to plan ahead of time and work on the essentials that we needed for the game. This included concessions such as cutting lighting from the sprites as illustrated above, or cutting out other locations that the team and I planned such as a subway setting. I also wanted some variation on each of the enemies, but didn't proceed as to not give our team's programmer extra work that wasn't directly essential.

As alluded to, my team faced an overall challenge in finding a programmer. I took initiative in solving this through attending the game jam's online icebreaker to try and find people and was eventually able to after switching through a couple of online chatrooms. This resolved a huge hole in our game plan and allowed us to properly move forward with development of the game.

Final Reflection

Overall, I'm happy with how the game turned out despite the constraints. I was able to accomplish what I set out to do with my artwork and I'm glad that I had such a cooperative and forward-thinking team that was able to adapt to shortcomings in our schedule. Notably, when I presented the game to the other game jam participants at the end of the game jam, there were a lot of positive reactions to the game's setting and the funny proportions of the game's enemies.

I'm very glad to have participated in this game jam and look forward to participating in more game jams in the future!
