IEEE Volunteerism (2021, 2024)

This page will cover my time volunteering with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), mainly as an A/V & Virtual Meeting Chair in 2024, but will also cover my time as Video Production Host twice in 2021
IEEE New Era AI Summit
Roles: Audio/Visual & Virtual Meeting Chair
Timeline: June 2024-October 2024
In August 2024, I acted as the A/V and Virtual Meeting Chair for the IEEE New Era AI Innovation Renaissance, an event featuring many pioneers and speakers about artificial intelligence and machine learning. Taking place in Seattle, Washington, I helped set up equipment (laptops, lights, cables) and recorded the event through Zoom.
I also worked on an introduction video (seen on the right) that introduces various professors and directors in the AI industry that was essential for kickstarting the event's social media marketing. Post-event, I also divided each presentation into their own individual videos.

This event and role was much more complex as I attended multiple planning meetings and worked on a variety of tasks including video making, website editing, and even answering support tickets on Eventbrite. The whole experience was overall very hectic as last-minute venue changes added a lot of stress to the production team.
In one unfortunate incident, the brand new laptops that the Event Chair bought for the event were not set up properly on time. Being 2 laptops short out of 3 for the event nearly ruined the production for the event as we almost did not have access to a laptop to record the guest presentations on Zoom. Having anticipated this, I brought my own laptop with me and was able to record the majority of the day's presentations myself. This saved a lot of trouble for the production team that had to be flown in last minute and helped make the event a success despite all the hurdles.
Later, in the workshops portion of the event that happened in October 2024, I ensured production went smoothly through recording the opening day keynotes and coordinating with the student volunteers at the University of Washington Bothell. As their communication with the Event Chair was limited, I took initiative in joining their organization's Discord server as to be able to get a better line of communication between the event committee and student volunteers. This proved to be vital not only for planning, but also for coordination during the event as students had an easy pipeline to be able to message me and get problems solved.

Overall, the event was a very good experience in event planning and coordination as I had to handle sudden deadlines and a variety of last-minute administrative hurdles. I'm proud that I was able to able to operate high-stress and ensure the event was a success for the IEEE.
IEEE Rising Stars 2021
Role: Video Production Host
Timeline: December 2020-January 2021
In January 2021, I did volunteer work for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). This was for their online Rising Stars 2021 conference (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) in which I acted as a Video Production Host. This meant I would host the Zoom session for the speaker host and guests, coordinate with them as needed, and record the session on Zoom.
The work involved a lot of planning during weekly remote meetings with other volunteers leading up to the event. During the event, I would coordinate with the other volunteers in order to ensure a smooth production and experience for remote attendees during the online conference, problem-solving as needed such as when speaker guests did not arrive on time. Communication was key as the conference was done entirely remotely and we had to work fast in order to keep session paces on time.
In addition to my hosting duties, I did light video editing work to fix the recording of one of the sessions whose video quality was ruined by another production host's poor internet conditions. This involved replacing the guest's video as shown in the recording with the actual file itself as to quickly circumvent the image quality and was a very important fix done for an important Microsoft CVP guest.

IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference 2021
Role: Video Production Host
Timeline: October 2021
In October 2021, I volunteered as a Video Production Host again for another one of the IEEE's events called the Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC). While I did the same tasks as before with Rising Stars, hosting the sessions was a lot more difficult due to the time commitments being much longer with upwards to 3 hours per session.
I also once again provided some light video editing work, this time cutting out unwanted video sections and adding a simple intro to a couple of panel videos as per request of the GHTC chairperson. An example can be seen on the left.
