Mystic Man Newspaper Comics

From 2015-2018 I illustrated short comics for Simon Fraser University's student newspaper The Peak. These were mainly in a strip called Mystic Man in which the titular hero solves problems and fights villains in wacky ways between 4 to 12 panels. During my time illustrating for The Peak I drew over 40 comics that were featured in its humour section.

Here are a couple of examples:

With the Mystic Man series, I took a simplistic approach after being inspired by children's book illustrator Ed Emberley. and how he used simple shapes to represent form. While the first few comics were rough, I eventually figured out my own style using what I learned from Emberley. It is here where I believe my unorthodox style shines the most as I aim to break conventional logic with the content of these comics and often play with the medium to assist with the punchline.

To create these comics, I traditionally drew them before scanning and cleaning them in Adobe Photoshop with later comics having a rough draft on paper before scanning and drawing them digitally using a Wacom Intuos PS drawing tablet.

You can find an online archive of my 40+ comics on my Artstation.com portfolio as well as other digital illustrations I've drawn down below.
